An Amateur Learns the Ropes
This started with a home weather station. I discovered that other weather enthusiasts were publishing their data to websites. I decided I would also like to do that, but knew virtually nothing about how to put a website together. Then came a Microsoft Download Newsletter that included an offer to sign up free for the Office Live beta. I took them up on it and literally had a rudimentary site built in a weekend. Since then, I have accumulated more than three years of study, practice and trial and error. I also found myself with a new hobby.
This site is the offspring of Office Live "Prescriptions," originally a single tips page on my weather site. As an amateur who now has some experience, I can speak to all of those who come to this task as naive as I was.
This is an attempt to demonstrate a simple website using only the tools provided by the Office Live platform. It also explores some of the customizing that is possible with the basic site designer. These are described on the Add a Little Pizazz page.
Why Are There Trees Here?
In Norse mythology, Yggddrasil was the "World Tree," and it belonged to Odin himself. It was a giant ash tree that linked and sheltered all of the realms. At its base were three wells, the Well of Wisdom, the Well of Fate and Hvergelmir, the source of all rivers. Today, trees still symbolize life and wisdom. Their branches reach in all directions for the nourishing light. We have decision trees, binary trees, file trees, family trees and even root directories. Phone trees provide for communication. Sometimes when surfing the web, we "cannot see the forest for the trees." Then, of course, I like trees. Finally, your job will be to make your website "tree" stand out in the internet forest.
